Hyundai Ioniq 5 N performance EV revealed with 650hp

The Ioniq 5 N EV gets many performance and cosmetic enhancements over the standard Ioniq 5.

Hyundai has unveiled its first high-performance EV, the Ioniq 5 N. Its two electric motors provide a total output of up to 650hp with the N Grin Boost mode. The Ioniq 5 N, apart from the performance upgrades, also gets a few cosmetic updates for the exterior and interior.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N performance

As mentioned, the Ioniq 5 N is powered by two electric motors that produce 609hp (combined) and can spin up to 21,000rpm. But with the N Grin Boost mode, as Hyundai calls its boost mode, they produce 650hp and help the Ioniq 5 N achieve a 0-100kph time of 3.4 seconds (claimed) and on to a top speed of 260kph. The N Grin Boost mode maximises acceleration by providing all the power on tap for 10 seconds. Hyundai has not announced the torque figure for the Ioniq 5 N.

All of this power is provided by an 84kWh battery, but Hyundai has yet to announce the range this battery will provide. Hyundai claims the battery can be topped up from 10-80 percent in 18 minutes using a 350kW DC fast charger.

Braking is handled by a four-piston, 400mm front disc and a one-piston, 360mm rear disc, and the carmaker says these brakes are constructed with new lightweight material and have optimised airflow for improved cooling. With N Brake Regen, the Ioniq 5 N offers up to 0.6G of decelerative force and it remains engaged while braking for up to 0.2G.

Hyundai has reinforced the chassis with 42 additional welding points and 2.1 metres of additional adhesives. The motor and battery mounts have also been reinforced for better rigidity in corners. The Ioniq 5 N also gets World Rally Championship (WRC)-inspired integrated drive axles at the front and rear.

Two features that Hyundai claims will help aid the driving feel are N e-shift and N Active Sound +. The former is said to emulate an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission used in N’s internal combustion engine (ICE) models. The latter, paired with the N e-shift, simulates an exhaust note, not only of an ICE, but also of EVs.

Using a 10-speaker system – eight inside and two outside – the N Active Sound + has three themes, namely Ignition, Evolution and Supersonic. The Ignition replicates the sound of a turbo-petrol engine, while the Evolution replicates the sounds of an EV, and the Supersonic theme is inspired by a twin-engine fighter jet. Hyundai says the N Active Sound + helps the driver get a reference of how the power is being utilised.

The Ioniq 5 also gets an N pedal, which has been developed to address an EV’s weight issues. The N Pedal is said to prioritise fast cornering speeds over energy efficiency. It does this by utilising decelerative force and creating a weight transfer to help in sharper corner entry.

Two more driving aids in the Ioniq 5 include the N Drift Optimiser and N Torque Distribution. The first simulates clutch kick action of an ICE-powered rear-wheel drive car to initiate a drift, while the latter controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels using an electronic limited-slip differential.

Like the standard Ioniq 5, the N version also gets a vehicle-to-load function that allows external devices to be powered by the EV’s battery.

Hyundai has added a few performance-enhancing body elements to the Ioniq 5 N. It is 80mm longer than the standard model, and 50mm wider, and gets 21-inch aluminium alloy wheels. The Ioniq 5 N also sits 20mm lower.

Its redesigned front bumper gets air curtains and air flaps to help channel air better and improve cooling. On the lower part of the bumper, there's an orange accent that runs across the side, and to the lower part of the redesigned rear bumper. Besides a larger air diffuser, the rear also gets an N-specific spoiler, which houses the third brake light.

Inside, the Ioniq 5 N has quite a few different bits than the standard Ioniq 5. It gets an N-specific steering wheel with two N buttons that can be customised to set the drive modes, however, there is also a separate button just for driving modes. The N Grin Boost mentioned earlier gets an individual button on the steering wheel.

Hyundai has also redesigned the centre console, optimising it for track driving with knee pads, shin supports and a redesigned centre armrest. For the seats, Hyundai has reinforced the bolsters on the bucket seats for better support for cornering and they are mounted 20mm lower than the seats on the standard Ioniq 5 N.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 in India

India currently gets the standard Ioniq 5, priced at Rs 44.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India), and it gets a 72.6kWh battery pack that has an ARAI-certified range of 631km. Its rear axle-mounted electric motor produces 217hp and 350Nm of torque.
